The Last Love Note by Emma Grey
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

The Last Love Note by Emma Grey is an emotional journey through love, loss, grief, and new beginnings. It’s a truly memorable love story.

My Overview

Two years after the death of her husband, Kate is still struggling and grieving the loss of the love of her life. Her husband died from Alzheimer’s disease, and now Kate, who’s not quite forty years old is struggling to find her way in life without him. All while being a mother to her young son, and working full-time. Lucky for her, she has a supportive best friend and an understanding boss.

Through alternating before and after timelines, we learn about Kate’s life and relationship with her husband (Cameron). Theirs is a beautiful love story full of joy and promise, that was cut short by early-onset Alzheimer’s. The flashbacks to the past provide raw glimpses into the progression of their relationship and the disease, and it’s all truly heartbreaking. As a widow, Kate is doing her best to honor her responsibilities of motherhood and her career, amidst her grief.

As the alternating timelines continue, more is learned about Kate’s boss, Hugh, and his involvement in her life while Cameron was alive. Not only has he been considerate and helpful to her since he hired her, but he’d done the same for Cameron too. Now, when a mishap during a work trip keeps them isolated for a weekend, life once again takes an unexpected turn for Kate. As it turns out, it’s the weekend she didn’t know she needed or was ready for. It’s the weekend that changes her life, in a way she hadn’t expected.

Overall, this is a heartbreaking, heartwarming, and memorable love story. While it turned out to be a lot heavier than I’d expected, I enjoyed the writing and occasional humor provided by Kate. This is definitely a romance story that won’t be for everyone, though, due to its heavy content.

My Recommendation

Although I wasn’t prepared for the level of grief and emotion in this story, I was captivated from beginning to end. I’m convinced part of what kept me so captivated, was the audiobook narration by Leanna Walsman. She really captured the voice and emotion of the characters. This is my first book by this author, and now I’m looking forward to reading some of her other books. The writing style and character development are what I’m expecting to continue to enjoy in her stories. Needless to say, I highly recommend this book.
