Worry Less, Parent Better by Dr. Karen Latimer, MD is a concise and relatable book with a variety of guidance for parents of young children and teens.
My Overview
Dr. Latimer is a mother of five and family physician. Her youngest two children are currently in their teens. In this concise audiobook (length is 4hrs and 49 minutes), she shares her guidance and thoughts on a variety of parenting topics. The book is divided into six important and relevant topics:
- Food
- Sleep
- Health and Safety
- Technology
- Socialization
- Achievement
Based on her experience as a physician and mother of five, Dr. Latimer has plenty of stories and practical insights to offer. As she points out, parents today are facing challenges never experienced before, due to technology, which understandably cause a lot of worry. So, in an engaging and conversational manner, she offers guidance in six specific and relevant topics. Some sections and guidance will feel more relevant and useful than others to the reader, depending on their situation or experience. For me, the sleep and technology chapters were the most relevant and helpful. Overall, this is the type of book that offers something for everyone, while reinforcing ways and reasons to worry less.
If you’re looking for a book heavy on data and studies, this isn’t it. However, if you’re looking for a book that’s akin to having a candid conversation with a family physician who’s still in the trenches of motherhood, this is it. As a bonus, the audiobook is read by Dr. Latimer herself, which really lends itself to giving the book a conversational feel.
My Recommendation
I highly recommend this book. It’s the kind of book I’ll keep handy, to listen to again in the future. While I’d never heard of Dr. Latimer, I really enjoyed her practical guidance and writing style. I’m glad I came across this book and took the time to listen to it.
