Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto is a highly entertaining mystery with lovable characters and quirky humor.

My Overview

I was drawn to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers based on the description of Vera Wong in the synopsis. A tea expert who keeps busy by stalking her son’s dating status online, and takes it upon herself to solve a crime? I couldn’t pass up on that πŸ˜†.

Sixty-year-old Vera Wong is a quirky, bossy, determined, and lonely woman. She’s the owner of a tea shop in San Francisco’s Chinatown, and her life is a predictable routine … right down to the single customer she receives each day. She lives alone on the second floor of her tea house, and the most excitement in her life comes from tracking her son’s dating status online and sending him constant reminders. Imagine her surprise (and delight) when she finds a dead man on the floor of her tea house one morning!

Suddenly, Vera finds herself very busy trying to solve the mystery herself. Why? Vera doesn’t believe anyone can do a job better than she can, even when it comes to detective work. Equipped with a pen and journal, and crime-solving knowledge gained from watching CSI, she takes on the task of single-handedly solving the mystery.

Shortly after the dead man is discovered, various strangers stop by the tea house. Of course, each is considered by Vera to be a suspect, and their names make it onto her journal. The more she inserts herself into their lives as she’s trying to identify the murderer, the more they get to know her and each other. Soon enough, the suspects are no longer strangers.

Overall, this was a delightful story filled with charming characters and hilarious dialogue. I specifically enjoyed Vera’s determination and bold opinions, which were the source of the humor in the story. I’m glad I got to meet Vera and her group of suspects 😊.

My Recommendation
