Someone Else's Shoes
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Someone Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes is a touching, funny, and uplifting story about friendship and second chances. It’s a view into the lives of women from different backgrounds, facing different situations. As their lives become entangled, the term “walking in someone else’s shoes” takes on literal meaning.

My Overview

At the center of the story is a pair of red custom-made Christian Louboutin six-inch high heels 👠. The shoes belong to Nisha, the wife of a millionaire who lives a life of luxury, though away from her teenage son. When she and Sam accidentally swap gym bags, it’s the beginning of a journey that will change their lives. Sam’s life is the opposite of Nisha’s, who is a stressed out middle-aged wife and mother. She’s the breadwinner of the family, since her husband is unemployed as suffers from depression. As the story unfolds, both women’s lives change in ways they’d never expected.

What to do if you discover you have someone else’s gym bag containing red six-inch heels? In Sam’s case, she immediately wears them, and notices becomes a different person when she wears them. Nisha, on the other hand, is stuck with the well-worn black shoes in Sam’s gym bag. She too wears them, but only out of necessity. That’s right, those are the only shoes Nisha has, since her husband has suddenly frozen her out of all their accounts and locked her out of their home. He’s done with their marriage, and didn’t even bother to give her notice. He is, however, adamant about Nisha returning the red shoes to him, and won’t discuss a divorce settlement until he receives them. Suddenly, Nisha and Sam’s lives become intertwined, and their journey of self-discovery and race to track down the shoes ensues.

The main characters in the story are Nisha and Sam, but the supporting characters are fantastic. They are well developed and endearing, and added depth to the storyline. My favorite character was Jasmine, a hotel worker who befriended Nisha, and offered her help when everyone else turned their backs on her. She was kind, supportive, and uplifting to a complete stranger; she’s an example of compassion and hope. Overall, the friendship and loyalty shown by each of the characters, make this a heartwarming story.

My Recommendation

I’ve read quite a few books by Jojo Moyes, and highly recommend this one. The writing style, character development, and humor are what I enjoy in her stories. If you can, listen to the audiobook. It’s read by Daisy Ridley, and really brings the story to life.
