This book is part of my 10 Christmas Books For This Holiday Season – 2023.
Almost Like Being In Love by Sariah Wilson is an insta-love story based on magical realism and time travel. It takes place in the highlands of Scotland, during Christmas time.
My Overview
Maren’s mother was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness. Maren and her mom were scheduled to travel to Scotland together, but now Maren must take the trip with her BFF Penny. While driving to the highlands, they get stuck in a blizzard and have no way to get help. When they awake, they find themselves in a castle in Highglen and the year is 1647! As it turns out, they were rescued by Duncan Campbell. As soon as he and Maren meet its insta-love for both.
Highglen is small town that magically appears at random years during Christmas time. Maren and Penny spend the days leading up to Christmas in Highglen, and learn about various Christmas traditions and customs. Any chance they get, Maren and Duncan sneak around to express their love. By the end of the week, Maren must decide whether she’ll remain in Highglen or return home to be with her dying mother. What will she do, now that she’s being in love?
Overall, this story was just ok for me. I enjoyed most everything about the story, except the main characters 😒. Their instant infatuation with each other was too much. My favorite parts of the story were the explanations for the various Christmas and wedding traditions and customs. Most everything else aside from the traditions and customs was just too cheesy.
My Recommendation
I didn’t enjoy this story as much as I’d expected, so I’m having a hard time recommending it. If you enjoy insta-love stories, this one might be a good one for you though. I listened to the audiobook, and thought the narration was great.
Have you read this story or listened to the audiobook?
