The Wake-Up Call by Beth O’Leary is a romance story, propelled by the mystery of some Lost & Found rings.
This book is part of my 10 Christmas Books For This Holiday Season – 2023.
My Overview
Izzy and Lucas are co-workers and arch-nemesis at the Forest Manor Hotel. Last December, Izzy had a crush on Lucas. Things went south when she declared her feelings for him in a Christmas card. This December, they’re arch-nemesis who’ll have to work together of a special assignment. Post pandemic, the hotel is no longer thriving as it was before. It’s now in disrepair and financially hanging on by a shoestring. In order to keep the hotel afloat, this Izzy and Lucas will have to combine their efforts to sell all the items in the Lost & Found room. When a few rings are discovered, Izzy decides that rather than selling them, they must find their rightful owners.
The more Izzy and Lucas work together on the Lost & Found project, the harder it is for them to ignore their feelings for each other. Is this opportunity to work closely together the wake-up call they need to acknowledge their feelings for each other? Unfortunately, they’re held back by the personal issues they’re dealing with. There’s also the distraction caused by one of the hotel guests. Furthermore, miscommunication continually keeps a relationship between Izzy and Lucas from forming.
Aside from the romance aspect, the theme of friendship and community plays a significant role in the storyline. The hotel owner cares about the employees and guests. The employees love the hotel, and are motivated to help keep the hotel afloat. The hotel guests care for one another, and the hotel. Together, they all exemplify kindness and giving, during Christmas time.
My Recommendation
This is a heartwarming enemies-to-lovers romance story. I enjoyed the storyline, along with the supporting characters, and the mystery of the lost & found rings. Although the story takes place in December, it’s low on the festivities of the season. I recommend this book, especially the audiobook.

I had a great time reading this one. The ring-thing had some great side stories to enjoy, but I think what made me adore this book was the hotel. There was a great found family thing going on there and so vital for Izzy.

I enjoyed the friendship and found family aspect too. Such a heartwarming story!
