One of Us is Dead by Jeneva Rose is a wild thriller that kept me guessing. It’s a fast-paced thriller that’s simply unputdownable!
This book was part of my 9 Spooky Books For Halloween list.
My Overview
Secrets, lies, and deception abound within this elite group … and one of them is dead. This is one wild story! To say the ladies of Buckhead are catty and mean, would an understatement. In this thriller, the villains and monsters are the women of Buckhead. By the end, you won’t be feeling too bad for their husbands either.
The story begins with Jenny’s interrogation by the police, for the investigation of someone’s death. From there, the story toggles between the interrogation (present) and the past. It’s through constant snippets from the past, that we learn more and more about the women, their lives, and the grudges they hold. It’s not long before it becomes obvious that they all have a motive for killing, or at least wanting someone in their group dead. We also get a sense early on that the big Halloween party is key to the story.
This is a fast-paced domestic thriller that kept me guessing. The identity of the one who is dead, isn’t revealed until the end, and it’s easy to get caught up in the back and forth of the story. What adds to the suspense, is that the story is told from the POVs of five of the women: Jenny, Shannon, Crystal, Karen, and Olivia. The toggling of timelines and POVs is effective in keeping the reader engaged throughout.
So what exactly happened at the big Halloween party? The story builds up to the night of that party, and then breaks it all down to reveal what exactly happened there. This is a full circle kind of story. It begins at the end, and after all the drama and suspense, there’s a finality to the story and the beginning is explained.
My Recommendation
This is my first book by Jeneva Rose, and now I can’t wait to read more of her books. Clearly, I’m off to a great start. This story was clever, entertaining, and simply unputdownable. If you can, listen to the audiobook. The story is read by five narrators, who truly brought the story to life.
Available on the Audible Plus catalog 🎧.

I like these kinds of books, but I have to have characters I at least relate to. Are there any like that? Or are they all unlikable snots? It seems like so many mysteries and thrillers have completely unlikable, unrelatable characters…
Thanks for commenting on my blog earlier this week! I’m glad to have found your blog. I’ll be back for sure.

The main characters aren’t relatable. Most of the characters are unlikable, and all are clever and conniving. That’s what makes this story so good 😊.
Glad I found your blog too!

This sounds like a great mystery. Interesting element about keeping the victim’s identity secret like that.

Yes, it is. I liked the author’s clever ways of keeping the story engaging and mysterious throughout. I was so glued to this story!
