Throughout the year, I put together lists of books that encompass the feel of the seasons. This is my list of chidren’s books for fall. These books are helpful in teaching children about the fall season, and create opportunities for cozy reading time. From toddlers to elementary school children, there’s something for them in this list.
I hope you and your children will enjoy reading some (or all!) of these books. Perhaps reading at least one of these will even become an annual fall tradition for you!
Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White
What’s Rebecca Estelle to do when pumpkins start sprouting all around her yard? She ignored them at first (she hates pumpkins), hoping they would go away. By fall, there are too many pumpkins. She quickly takes action by baking and carving the pumpkins, to share with her neighbors.
The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming
Squirrel loves his tree, which is always full of beautiful leaves. One day, however, some the leaves are missing! He’s quick to assume there’s a leaf thief on the loose. He enlists the help of his friend, Bird, and together they begin the search for the leaf thief. As they try to solve that mystery, they learn about changing seasons and change in general.
The end of the book includes a section explaining facts about fall, trees, and the reason leaves fall off trees during this season.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s First Fall by Eric Carle
It’s the caterpillar’s first fall, so there’s lots to learn about the season. Follow the caterpillar, as it learns and explores the changes in nature fall brings. Young children will appreciate the the beautiful illustrations and colors, and the cute storyline is sure to keep their interest as well.
Hello, Fall! by Deborah Diesen
This is a sweet story about a girl and her grandfather, as they welcome the changes fall brings. The beautiful illustrations and storyline are bound to keep young children engaged. This is a charming book about nature and the changes this season brings.
Anne’s School Days: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables by Kallie George
It’s fall in Avonlea, and Anne is enjoying the season and school days. Life is going splendidly for her at school, until Gilbert joins the class. It’s possible she may not be able to enjoy her school days again. Follow Anne on her adventures with her best friend Diana, and misadventures with Gilbert. The story and beautiful illustrations are perfect for this season.
This is the third book in the series, but could be read as a stand-alone.
Pete the Cat Falling for Autumn by Kimberly and James Dean
It’s the first day of fall, and Pete the Cat isn’t happy about it. He’s already missing all the fun of summer. Follow him along as he discovers how much fun fall can be. As he enjoys hayrides, apple picking, and time with family and friends, he realizes fall is a great time of the year. Most important, he learns that change isn’t necessarily bad.
