Considering all that’s happened in Annie’s life, it’s no wonder she’s come to expect this won’t end well. This is a witty, funny, and emotional story about a difficult time in Annie’s life. The story is told through journal entries and emails, and I loved that. I really felt like I got to know Annie and her situation that way.
Annie’s life was going great … until it wasn’t:
- Her fiancé has taken off to Paris to “get his head on straight”.
- She quit her job due to sexual harassment from her boss.
- Due to a non-compete agreement she can’t work as a Chemist for two years.
- She and her best friend are currently at odds.
There was a lot going on in this story, but it all came together well. This is a story about family, friendship, love, and new beginnings. It has a great message about standing up for yourself and letting others into your life. The story gets pretty serious at times, but it’s balanced with the mystery of the new neighbor (Harper) and the humor (courtesy of the neighborhood Listserv).
I’ve enjoyed a few books by Camille Pagán. The realistic situations and relatable characters make her stories meaningful. This story’s no exception. Some of the recent books I’ve enjoyed by this author are Forever is the Worst Long Time and Everything Must Go.
