Ready or Not by Cara Bastone
My rating: ⭐️⭐️/5

Ready or Not by Cara Bastone is a story about Eve’s journey through her unexpected pregnancy, and the impact on her life and those around her.

My Overview

Eve Hatch is fairly content with her life in Brooklyn, but finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand. Over the span of nine months, she’s in for even more surprises. Between the pregnancy, paternity, logistics, and her shifting relationship with Willa (best friend), there’s something new for her around every corner. Aside from the pregnancy, her biggest surprise, is the way she starts to feel about Shep (Willa’s brother). They’ve been friends for years, but suddenly even that dynamic is shifting. Ready or not, Eve will be living the life she hadn’t anticipated.

As it turns out, I was in for a surprise too. Based on the previous books I’d read by this author, I expected to love this one, but I didn’t 😕. The witty banter, endearing characters, and entertaining situations I’ve enjoyed before are missing in this one. Instead, the storyline is a compilation of all of the characters’ conflicts and dilemmas.

Further, the storyline is unrealistic in the sense that issues and questions are constantly glossed over. Whenever something is brought up, the characters get distracted by something else and move on. Considering the weight of the situations, glossing over them is unrealistic. Also, at times the dialogue’s purpose is simply the author pushing her own agenda. For instance, when one of Eve’s co-workers learns about the pregnancy, her response is something like “I didn’t know you’re married.” Sure, some people might make a comment like that, but the author specifically points out the co-worker is wearing a crucifix necklace. As if only a Christian might comment as such 🙄. Overall, as much as I’m fond of NYC settings, even that couldn’t make up for all that didn’t work for me in this story.

My Recommendation

This book was clearly a miss for me. However, although I won’t be recommending this book, I won’t discourage others from giving it a try. After all, many others have enjoyed it.
