Goodreads Choice Award: Nominee for Best Nonfiction (2023)

Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity by Dr. Peter Attia is a comprehensive view into the science and habits for health and wellness.
My Overview
Dr. Attia takes the reader on a comprehensive journey through the world of medicine and approaches for longevity. He is a physician who became disillusioned with the reactive approaches of medicine (Medicine 2.0), and instead focused on creating a proactive approach for long-term health (Medicine 3.0). His goal is to outlive by living longer while enjoying good health. The plan for longevity is based on maintaining both physical and mental functions.
The book is focused on living longer by avoiding or delaying what Dr. Attia calls āthe Horsemenā. These are the four chronic diseases which are the leading cause of death. The cause of these diseases is explained in detail, along with lifestyle changes aimed at preventing (or at best delaying) them. At the core of the prevention plan are: exercise, nutrition, sleep, and mental wellness. So, nothing groundbreaking. Whatās unique about Dr. Attiaās approach is the research and data he presents, to educate about these chronic diseases. His approach and intensity, arenāt for everyone (including myself), but itās worthwhile to learn about process. After all, the bookās goal is to provide insight and understanding about living healthier. In essence, the purpose of the book is to arm the reader with valuable information, so that each can make the best choices for themselves.
Wondering if this book is too dry or boring based on the content? Itās not. In spite of the book being research and data driven, itās written in an easy to understand manner. Through anecdotes from his own health experience and that of his patientsā, the content is kept engaging throughout. Overall, I found the entire book to be eye opening and fascinating.
